SIMCARD REGISTRRATION DEADLINE EXTENDED; NEW APP TO BE USED FOR REGISTRATION

BACKGROUND OF STORY

The SIM registration exercise began on 1st October, 2021 and was expected to end on 31st March, 2022. As at 17th March, 14,091,542 SIM Cards had been linked to the Ghana Card, 10,348,532 Bio-Captures conducted and 99,445 New SIMs registered.

Due to a number of factors including the fact that over 7.5 million citizens and residents were yet to obtain Ghana Cards to enable them register their SIM cards, it was clear that the deadline for completion of the registration of the remaining active SIM cards could not be met.

More time would also be required to update the SIM Registration App for the registration of diplomats, while a Self-Service SIM Registration App was also being developed to facilitate registration of SIM cards for Ghanaians resident abroad. This therefore prompted the extension to 31st July, 2022.

Unfortunately, this deadline was also not met since most Ghanaians still could not register their SIM cards due to a number of factors.

UPDATE

An authoritative tweet from the Ministry of communication and the Ghana broadcasting cooporation indicates an extension of the deadline and other vital information. It reads;

SIM Card re-registration deadline extended to September 30th. Unregistered SIM Cards at end of August to be barred from certain services. A SIM registration app will be launched to allow people to register the SIM Cards themselves, you will pay a GHS 5 charge per registration.
